Looking to have an October 2009 wedding which is great as my parents celebrate their 4oth wedding anniversary (ruby) on October 12 2009.

I have been very very busy and distracted and unmotivated this past month and my thesis writing has suffered big time! Tomorrow I will be back in the lab for a couple of days working with a colleague on some protein extractions (this will make up my final thesis chapter) and then back to hard core writing on Wednesday. I am still working on my first chapter and I was hoping to be half way through my second chapter at this point in time. My scholarship stipend also finished in December 31 so I am now living off and paying my mortgage with savings and income from my rental property. Its a bit scary doing this knowing also that a wedding is coming up! Ack! But things have a way of working out!

The one good thing about getting ready for a wedding is that its the catalyst I needed to get my dodgy acne/blemish prone skin sorted!

Oh and today is my birthday. I am 32. Woot!

Hiatus

I've been absent a while and I just popped in to tell those very few people who read my blog that writing my thesis must take precedence over blog writing for the next couple of months. We go to a 45 minutes private class with our wonderful teacher Sherry and then out for a gorgeous feast of a dinner at our favourite restaurant every Thursday. So it is with great anticipation that each time the new Dancing With the Stars series starts we hunker down and watch each show and analyse each dance to see if they are doing the steps that we do! Its quite amusing really. We've become very good at being able to tell the good ones from the bad and our comments often match up with some of the judges!

So far we have mastered (mastered as in we can do this quite safely at a wedding if the music is right) the Jive (lots of fun), the Cuban Rumba (seriously sexy), the Cha Cha (I get to legitimately wiggle my hips on this one WOOT!) and the Waltz (who would have thought that three measly steps could be so hard?). We are doing a little Samba at the moment but I don't really enjoy it that much. I really want to move on to ballroom Salsa and Tango.

I think the 'celebrities' who go on to the show are super brave and do a fantastic job! Most of them make it look easy and I can tell you now it definitely isn't! My favourite performer so far in all of the series previous winner Kate Ceberano. She totally rocked!

This year it looks like Toni Pearen might be a favourite. This girl can dance!

The boxer Danny Green is sensational too as is footballer Paul Licuria. I think a lot of their success is that their chosen sports of Boxing and Football require a lot of balance, accurate footwork and an element of grace. I think that may be a reason why in this season as in seasons past the swimmers don't do so great at the dancing.

Another point to note is that I think Sonia Kruger is simply luminous!!! She is downright gorgeous, wears awesome frocks and has some of the funniest one-liners I have ever heard! The lady is sassy, smart and funny!

So take it from a curvy girl who likes to dress up, that ballroom dancing is one of the most fun ways I have ever found of doing something active and where having a bit of a booty can be a good thing....especially in those latin dances!!!

Pictures courtesy of http://au.tv.yahoo.com/dancing-with-the-stars/

Leather Jacket and My Weekend!

I picked up my altered leather jacket a couple of weeks ago. I had the sleeves shortened to sit just above my wrist. They are a smidge too short but I don't really care because the jacket is now wearable and looks so much better than when the sleeves reached past my fingers! I also got my new skinny/slim/straight leg jeans altered at the waist to stop gaping so I can wear them without a belt. I must say I find jeans very difficult to find that fit, look good and feel comfortable.
On Saturday I went to a good friend's hens night. we started out at a Mexican restaurant and drank fish bowl margeritas! The along the way we were at a gay club that had a pole in the middle of the dancefloor. I tried to put my pole dance lessons from earlier this year to good use but wearing heels and jeans does not lend itself to gripping the pole very well. At least I gave it a shot :) One guy wearing his "Gay is the New Black" tee put me to shame with a great pole routine! All up it was a fun night and most importantly no hangover the next day!

I wore my new skinny/slim leg jeans from Sportsgirl. White babydoll top with black lace detail from god knows where, my Nine West Heechs and a black tuxedo blazer from Bardot. This top is great to wear when I go out to dinner and I know I'm going to eat lots - i.e Mexican Fajitas and Margeritas - definitely hides any bloat!

My pole dancing. By day 4 it was back to normal and contact went back in on Day 5. I'm glad that is over now.

I just went to the iTunes store and downloaded Phil Collins Hits and The Essential Michael Jackson. Totally cool albums! I'm listening to Rock With You right now :).

My leather jacket arrived from the UK and it is a beautiful soft great quality leather. The jacket fits like a glove except for the sleeves! The reach down past my finger tips. Now I don't have the longest arms but in general most jackets hit somewhere between my wrist bone and just before the ends of my fingers. The sleeves on this jacket I have concluded, are abnormally long and they have a zipper which adds a degree of difficulty to having them shortened. I'm glad to say that there is a guy here in Hobart who is just a gun at altering and fixing leather gear. I took the jacket into him on Saturday and we decided that if he shortens the sleeves and takes the zippers out completely the sleeves will hit at my wrist bones. It will only cost $35 too!! I'm picking it up in a week. I hope he does a good job!

And just beacuse I can here are a couple of vids. My two favourite Michael Jackson/Jacksons songs. Probably two of the best songs ever produced. Off the Wall and Can you Feel it. Enjoy :)

Would I be revealing my age if I say I remember when Can you Feel it came out? I'm sure I first saw/heard it on Countdown! I wore my new tenant booties and they are great!

I currently have an eye infection. I can't wear my contacts and the antibiotic drops I have to use taste really mucky and yucky at the back of my throat...ugh! Add to that the beautiful blood-shot eye I'm carrying!

I went to a new physiotherapist today about my ITB and knee problems. Well she didn't tell me much that I didn't already suspect.

I am very tight in the ITB, quad, hammy, calf, anterial tibialis areas of the left leg. My left knee cap is also tight in as far as there is more movement in the right patella. The ITB especially pulls my leg out of alignment, the anterior tibialis causes me to pronate more than usual and all contribute to making that left knee not track right. The underlying problem is hip stability and that my glutes are firing momentarily AFTER my hammys. Yup probably should have addressed that about 7 years ago when I was first told it...anyway!

I have heaps of stretching and a couple hip strengthening exercises to do, a remedial massage next week and then go back to the physio in 2 weeks. I can keep doing my bootcamp but I need to back the intensity off a little in the sprint work etc. Now lets just work on me remembering to do everything, eyedrops, stretches, exercises oh and writing a phd thesis in there somewhere too :).

They arrived!

My Nine West Tenant Booties arrived from the USA yesterday. The whole thing was a bit of a drama but I am glad they are here.

Originally, way back in June I noticed the booties on sale in Australia on the Nine West site for $100. I was undecided so I didn't buy them. Later in mid-July I noticed they were further reduced to $89 or was it $79? In any case they were sold out Australia wide! We don't have a Nine West store in Tasmania so purchasing online was the only option. I hadn't seen nice shoe boots anywhere else in
town. I considered getting some similar ones from ASOS.com but was unsure of the quality of ASOS shoes fater reading up on them on the Vogue forums. I couldn't find my size on eBay either. I resigned myself to missing out on the booties. Then for some reason I typed in Tenant for a Google search and lo and behold Amazon.com had them, in my size, for USD$34.95 and free delivery across the USA (Amazon doesn't ship to Australia). Woot! I bought them and forwarded them to Aaron from the now defunct BoxVoyage forwarding service. Aaron closed down his business the day after I bought the shoes on July 23. Phew... The postage ended up costing more than the shoes but all up the cost of the shoes and the postage once converted to AUD cost exactly what I would have paid for the shoes on sale if I had walked into a Nine West store and tried them on.

They fit like a glove and look so cute! Can't wait to wear them somewhere...anywhere! But the weather is awful at the moment. Very wet and cold. The booties are satin covered so there is no way I am wearing them outside until they get at least 3 coats of Scotchguard on them :)

Here they are...
<img style="cursor: pointer; I'm excited because I really like sultanas but the other lunchbox size packets are just too big and I end up eating the whole lot which I don't want to do :) Its a psychological thing trust me...How cute are the packets?

My most frustrating experience during the past week is suspecting that my intense knee, thigh and calf pain from last week is most likely Illiotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) which is a major bitch when you run. why? Because you can't or at least shouldn't run while you rehab it. Pete the massage therapist from Bootcamp had a look at it on Saturday for me and said ITBS is the most likely scenario. I have since read up on it and I think he is correct. He only worked on my left leg for about 5 minutes but I haven't had any of that intense pain since! I still have some stiffness around the knee and where the ITB attached on the shin and also some patella pain (Runner's Knee most likely). This afternoon I have a remedial massage booked and my therapist Emma is brilliant at fixing me up. Tomorrow morning I have a physio appointment booked to hopefully identify what muscle imbalance is the likely cause and what strengthening exercises I will need to work on. Its been one week since I last went for a run and another 6 days before Bootcamp starts again so hopefully I will be back on track with working out next week.

Finally its cold. Very very very cold. Snow to sea level last night and a bitter bitter Antarctic chill in the air today. There was even a tiny bit of snow on my lawn this morning when I took the garbage out. Brrrrr................

Today I'm wearing woollen hiking socks (I get cold feet), puma street trainers, levis, TWO damart thermals (singlet and a long sleeve), long sleeve cotton tee, woollen cardi and a scarfe. I pop my down jacket and polarfleece gloves on when I go outside. Not the best look but I'm snug as a bug in a rug ;)

And yesterday I received my new Wendy Mullin Sew U Home Stretch Book. I read it cover to cover last night and I think I may have to venture out on Saturday and buy some knit fabric to make a tee. Oh and also get my overlocker/serger off my mum.

Muse...credit to D at Delightful

D from the blog Delightful posted about Melanie Huynh, assistant stylist at Vogue Paris and her impeccable style. I ventured over to Heather Bailey's blog today. Its been a while since I last visited but as always I am amazed at her use of colour and the beautiful photography! I was also delighted to see this free pattern download for cute little pin cushion. I currently use a tin to keep my pins in and they often end up on the floor when I knock it over so I think I need to use up some of my scraps and make the pin cushion thus...

Heather officially opens her new online store today, August 12. Visit the store here. This is very very bad for me because as mentioned in a previous blog post I have a terrible fabric fetish. Good think I haven't got any spending money right now or else I would be in major trouble!

I really adore this fabric and the bag is pretty cute too. I think this fabric is part of Heather's new Pop Garden range. I'm glad she has a new range out because I was alittle sick of the Freshcut collection. They are all available at the store.

And last but not least (especially now that my hair is growing back after the big chop at Christmas time) are Heather's Trash Ties. They look very cool. The quote on the page that made me giggle was "The coolest new hair thingies". They are indeed thingies. I'm not sure yet whether the pictures are just clever marketing spin or whether these 'thingies' will actually do what the pictures show especially for my thick heavy locks that haute doing anything but hanging there. I suppose the only way to find out is to buy some eh? Hmmmm... They come in two sizes; standard and long and instructions are here.

Possibly something I could do with my current hair length

I think this 'do is very cute

New Shoes and my Brother's Birthday

Yesterday was my brother's 38th birthday. We had dinner at my parent's house and ate chocolate cake (I scored the leftovers weeeee!). We managed to take one nice shot of him and his sons and then another for fun...On the previous evening (Saturday) I headed out with a girlfriend for a drink and a bite to eat and I had to wear my new NineWest Heech wedges. Even more so now after she gave me three gorgeous vintage purses that she used to use when she was a young woman. Now if any of you know my mum or ever get to know her you will note that she is meticulous with the care that she takes of all her possessions. She handed over the said purses on Sunday after mentioning that she had noticed the trend in stores recently for small embellished, sparkly clutches and purses and how expensive they were. She also noted that you can hardly fit a thing in the modern ones and that she hoped that I never paid that sort of money when she had perfectly good ones that she would give me so long as I use them. She doesn't need to twist my arm!

Without any further ado on to the purses. The first is a black patent number from early 80s. I know this because mum said she used it when she was the same age as me and that puts us in the early 80s. Its not actually patent but a type of vinyl but is immaculate.

Next up we have a gorgeous gold Glomesh (made in Australia) purse. As you can see in the pics it is perfect! The age of this one is somewhere in the 80s. My dad's sister worked in the Glomesh factory in Sydney for a lot of years so as a family we have a fair bit of this stuff.

In the other picture you can see my mum's purse with the small gold Glomesh purse that I have had since I was a wee lass. I used to take this purse with me to church when I went with my grandmother and put it in a handbag made out of kangaroo fur or something! Stylish. I don't think I have the fur bag anymore. What a shame.

And because my mum is so particular about keeping things clean she even kept the original Glomesh plastic bag the bag came in!

The third bag that mum gave me is probably the sweetest. To set the scene. My mum immigrated to Australia in 1967-68 from Greece, aged just 17 years. On October 12, 1969 (aged 18) she married my dad. October 25 of that same year her mum gave her some money to buy herself a gift for her Name Day (Saints Day - something many older Greeks celebrate in stead of birthdays). So my mum went and bought herself the gorgeous little cream beaded bag in the last photos.

So this bag is circa 1969 and is in almost perfect condition. The beads in the middle of the flowers used to be a gold colour but over time the colour has worn off and left behind a bead with a distinctly bronze colour. At first I thought the beads were always bronze until I notice a little remnant of the original gold. But this does matter at all because not only does it not look odd on the bag but I also have a great pair of bronze heels that I have had trouble finding a bag to match. So now I can use this one!

This little bag is my absolute favourite and I can't wait to use it!

Heech

My Nine West Heech wedges arrived yesterday! Yah! I love them. The leather is super soft and they are quite comfortable in so far as I have worn them around the house for half an hour this morning. It will take me a little time to get used to them and to find the right outfits to pair them with but I really love them! Now lets see if H likes them too. I really really like Camille from Childhoodflames and have just today discovered Strawberry Kitten who is a gorgeous German girl called Nadine. She looks fabulous in almost every single outfit she blogs about and I love how she mixes vintage, preppy, rockabilly and classic fashion styles to put together a truly unique look. It helps that she is very beautiful and tiny to boot! Oh and both Nadine and Camille sew too!

I guess I look at these blogs for much the same reason as I look at crafty blogs, for inspiration. I can't identify with Nadine and Camille too much as both seems to be tall (well taller than me with longer legs!) and very slim whereas I'm short and short-waisted and rather curvy and athletic to boot. I hope, however, to gain a little bit of insight from these girls about being adventurous in my fashion choices and to not stare at the wardrobe in dismay with no clue how to put together an outfit and also to not be afraid to define my own style! I do have a slight problem in that I feel my outfits look best when I wear any of my wonderful heels but in my day to day work I can't wear anything with heels as I spend most of my day standing in a lab or a bakery where wearing heels would be an occupational health and safety no no. Not to mention that apart from a few pairs of boots and wedges I can't wear heels for very long or walk far in them because my wonderfully bunion-ed feet leave me crippled! Sigh.

Anyway I often find myself thinking of ways to put outfits together and then get dismayed when I put it on only to find that it looks ridiculous or hideous. So lately I have been trying just to play around with stuff a little bit. Its winter and very cold here at the moment so I am working with layering which I have never felt I did well and am enjoying it more and more. I have some burgundy opaque tights on and a black jersey dress, a little black long sleeve t-shirt over that and a long line charcoal woolen cardie with my flat riding boots. I think I look OK but don't expect me to start posting pics like those wonderfully photogenic and confident young ladies :)

Before I go today let me just tell you of a few things I am contemplating purchasing right now.
I am considering the following American Apparel items:

*Tri-blend Pullover - Nice for layering. Will need to go up a size I think after a few ladies on Vogue mentioned it is a bit short through the body.
*Uni-sex triblend t-shirt -I might just go into cotton-on and get a couple tees from them rather than spend at AA for a simple tee.
I'm not going to get them, however, until American Apparel refund me the money for a return. I bought an interlock wrap dress that just didn't fit right so I sent it back. Refunds take 6-8 weeks according to their website which is totally insane! anyway I am having an email debate with one of the customer service people about it currently.

I did successfully buy this skirt from them in all black. Its the high waist interlock pencil skirt and its a great everyday skirt. Made from a thick stretchy jersey I wore it on a trip to Noosa recently. Because Noosa got a little cold I simply added some footless tights a tank and a cardi to the skirt and I was dressed for cool Queensland weather. Here at home where it is a trifle colder (!) I team it with opaques and a couple of tops and a woollen cardi and bob's your mother's brother!
I like the look of the AA high waist interlock mini too - which looks to me like simply a shorter version of the skirt I have - but it comes with an unfinished hem which I think is lazy. My skirt has a hem and its not cheap to buy it from AA in Australia. So I figure if I can find a nice bit of jersey fabric at Spotlight there is no reason why I can't make it myself!

I had to have them!

I fell in love with the Nine West Heech wedges that Camille has been wearing with some outfits on her blog ChildhoodFlames. As soon as I saw them, I had to have them. They are reminiscent (ie. pretty much exact copies but with a wedge rather than a heel) of the Balenciaga gladiator sandals seen on the feet of MK Olsen here. I bought these nine west ones off US ebay in black (I am eagerly awaiting their arrival),

and now I wondering whether the tan might be useful as well! But I must admit that I really don't like the flat version of any gladiator sandal! I think these wedges will be part of the Nine West Australian Spring collection due for release any week now but will probably retail for about $160 and I'm not about to pay that for a pair of wedges!

Another lemming of note are the Nine West Tenant booties. They were on sale on the Nine West Australian website last month for $100. Last week they were on sale for $79. But wouldn't you know it they had sold out in both Melbourne and Sydney!!! So I had a quick look on the internet and found them at Amazon.com for US$34.95! Of course Amzon won't ship to Australia so I have used a package forwarding service which will end up costing me about US$30-40 more and they will still turn out cheaper that buying them online from Nine West Australia! God I love the exchange rate at the moment!!!

Oh and don't you just love the collage below. I used Polyvore. Pretty nifty.

New Logo

So here it is...my new logo!

I had better start creating something! I am about to purchase this Alannah Hill embroidered cotton fabric. All up the piece is 2.7 metres or so. Should be enough to make myself a skirt. Perhaps I will practice a little first.

I am also hoping to get the spare room at home sorted out in the next month or so. We live in a 3 bedroom townhouse. Obviously we use the main bedroom. H uses the next biggest room as a home office and the third bedroom has a spare single bed, my tall boy drawers, my computer and a built in wardrobe. My computer is newer than H's and so hopefully we will move all of the business bookkeeping info etc etc onto my computer and move that into the home office which should give me some sewing room once I have rearranged the furniture. H is already using my monitor because his died a few weeks ago so I can't really use my computer right now even if I wanted to! At the moment I am using the dining table as a sewing area and this does not lend itself to creativity unfortunately!

Logo design

A few weeks ago I had a request on my Myspace to add as a friend someone called LogoBanana. Normally I just refuse new friends but for some reason I checked this person out. Turns out the request from a company called LogoBanana who design logos for businesses and had already designed one for an etsy seller that I had viewed. I was interested because the initial design would only cost US$10 and included one revision. Then it would cost US$25 to get the logo (without a watermark) in many different image formats sent to you with one more revision. I jumped on board!

Here is the initial logo design sent to me;
I love the lettering on this logo but my revision was to remove the art deco-esque loop and replace it with something similar to the spiral and leaf motif on the header of this blog design.

The company returned the following;
This is nice too but I feel that the leaves are just far too big. So I had a bit of a play with the logo and sent them back this revision as my final logo;I really do love this design and from now on I can use it on labels and tag of the things I make.

wall canvas

A friend came across this tutorial yesterday and I just had to post it. It feels so nice to know that someone somewhere has read my ramblings :) Please feel free to keep dropping by.

At the moment I am not creating anything but I am using my machine and a needle and thread to repair, hem, darn, and replace buttons on a whole suite of clothing items that are piled up near my machine. I started yesterday with fixing a couple of holes in a knit cardigan, reattaching some lace edging to a pretty top and cutting off some loose ribbon from a pretty bra. I also pinned a new pair of jeans that need hemming. I pre-shrunk the jeans in a hot wash and hot tumble drier and only need to turn up about 1 cm of the hem to make them look nice so no cutting involed. Luckily they didn't shrink too much and still fit me and the denim is quite thin so the double hem will not be too bulky. I also have a couple of skirts that need re-hemming and I need to reattach a pocket to a pair of the boy's jeans. I might try and finish all of that tonight so that if the urge strikes to creat I won't feel guilty about putting aside the 'proper' sewing jobs!

Cushions....finally

As I mentioned in this post I was commissioned to make a set of eight 50cm x 50cm zippered cushion covers out of amy butler fabrics. Since I had never made any before I bought a 50cm insert and made one for myself out of the blue coriander - my customer, curious_girl, wanted the covers to be durable so I interlined each piece with some calico for sturdiness and thickness...its the most comfy cushion we have on the sofa and we fight over it :)

Here is my blue coriander version.

This is curious_gal's set of cushion covers.

This is one of the commissioned cushion covers with my insert in - just checking the fit - I think it looks quite nice on my blue sofa....hmmm what a shame I don't have enough of this fabric left to make another one :)

In anticipation of making more commissioned pieces plus gifts I had some fabric labels printed byPurpleHug on etsy which you may be able to see sewn into the side seams of the cushions. They say Lippy Lou Designs. I have since decided I like Lippy Lou Creations better (hence the title of this blog) but the labels will do for now. I also had some mini cards printed by Moo cards and they are just the best quality!!! I'm tempted to get a whole stack more printed with something because they are just too cute! And currently I am having a logo designed for me by a company called LogoBanana who sent me an advertisment via Myspace - hopefully they come up with a cute logo for Lippy Lou Creations :)

New blog template

Whilst I absolutely adored my 'I am the master evil genius' template my picture of the evil genius had recently disappeared and with the new layouts introduced by blogger and my inability to locate the original template I had to let the evil genius go. However I did find this great butterfly template by Amanda which I think is pretty cool. The only problem being that I have lost all my links to other cool blogs and my wists link from the side of the page. I have emailed Amanda to ask about this.

In the meantime it has been so long since I posted. I must update my blog with the final pics of the cushions that I made for curious_girl.

I also joined StyleHive and have added a follow me widget in the previous post if you would like to follow me.

And finally I discovered the most gorgeous adorable cute fashionable stylish girl ever in Camille from childhood flames. I think she is just awesome and I look forward to following her daily blog and wish 'if only' I could be so stylish....sigh...

EDIT: I have now discovered how to put in my wists and my blogroll again :) I also included a slideshow of my flickr pictures but because I deleted some pics in my flickr the slideshow now comes up with blanks! I'll try and work that one out another day.

widget
